STATEMENT IN OBSERVANCE OF
AMATEUR RADIO AWARENESS MONTH |

| Whereas, Delaware the First State has more then thirteen hundred licensed amateur radio operators, who have been licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. These dedicated volunteers, also known as Hams, have been providing vital supplemental communications to their communities during times of natural disasters, in local emergencies and at public events since the earliest days of wireless radio; and
Whereas, these Amateur Radio Operators demonstrated their value in public assistance by providing emergency radio communications to citizens of the First State without compensation, which is in the best interest for the State of Delaware as well as the world; and Whereas, Amateur Radio Operators are on the alert for any local or global emergency. They practice their communications skills during the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), Inc.'s Field Day exercise, which this year will take place during the weekend of June 26-27, 1999, along with other ARRL sanctioned events during the month of June; and Whereas, Amateur Radio promotes international goodwill, encourages young people to pursue an education and careers in the scientific, engineering or liberal arts fields and expands the state of the art in the communications and electronics through experimentation; and Now, Therefore, We, Thomas R Carper, Governor, and Ruth Ann Minner, Lieutenant Governor, of the State of Delaware, do hereby declare June 1999, Amateur Radio Awareness Month. |
